Keanu Reeves is reprising his role as Neo opposite Carrie-Anne Moss' Trinity in a fourth Matrix adventure with Lana Wachowski behind the lens.

Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich shared the news that following the $1.6-billion box office success of Lana Wachowski and sister Lilly's original Matrix trilogy, a fourth film had received the green light.

"We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana," said Emmerich.

"Lana is a true visionary - a singular and original creative filmmaker - and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe."

"Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I'm very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends," Lana Wachowski said.

The announcement coincides with 20th anniversary screenings of The Matrix in the US. The original film spawned the 2003 sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions

Reeves is back in The Matrix universe following his recent franchise successes with Toy Story 4 and John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum.
