Cable giant HBO has revealed it will premiere the final season of Game of Thrones in the "first half" of 2019 and also plans to begin work on the prequel series next year.
Reuters reports that Casey Bloys, HBO's President of Programming, shared the news at a Television Critics' Association event in Beverly Hills but did not provide further details on the eighth and final season of the global fantasy phenomenon.

Bloys said the search is now on for the director and cast of the prequel, with the plan to begin filming the pilot episode in 2019.
The prequel takes place thousands of years before Game of Thrones and has been created by GoT author George RR Martin and screenwriter Jane Goldman (Kingsman, X-Men).

Fans are set to see "the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour" and learn more about the families of Westeros.
HBO had five different scripts to choose from before deciding on Martin and Goldman's prequel.
"The reason we did multiple scripts is out of five, we'd be lucky to get one we are very excited about," Bloys explained.
