Secret of Marrowbone star Mia Goth says that she found working on the movie a challenge because she had to crack what is essentially a puzzle of a script.

The directorial debut of Sergio G. Sánchez, who wrote The Orphanage and The Impossible, the movie tells the story of a tragic young family of siblings who struggle to hide a terrible secret in a dark old mansion they've moved into in late sixties America.

Speaking to RTÉ Entertainment, Goth, who plays eldest sister Jane, said, "it was quite a challenge. I read the script a couple of times before meeting Sergio and even then I had to ask questions to try and figure it all out and it took a while.

"It's challenging you as an actor and it challenges the audience members. It's not just spoon feeding you the whole narrative and making it an easy ride."

Her co-star, George MacKay, who has previously appeared in Pride, plays older brother Jack in the movie and the actor says he got quite obsessive about the role while filming.

"I think that's the beauty of Sergio's script, there's so many layers do it," MacKay said. "He was saying that it's a bit like tweed - you know there's patterns and then you see another pattern and another one beneath it.
