Helena Bonham Carter has been confirmed to be taking over the role of Princess Margaret in the next series of The Crown.

Earlier this year, she had been tipped to be signing on to play Queen Elizabeth's younger sister Princess Margaret in the third season of the monarchy drama, but Netflix have just officially announced the news now.

In a statement, the actress said she is "terrified" to be following in the footsteps of Vanessa Kirby, whose performance as the princess has earned her universal acclaim.

Bonham Carter said lightheartedly: "I'm not sure which I'm more terrified about - doing justice to the real Princess Margaret or following in the shoes of Vanessa Kirby's Princess Margaret.

"The only thing I can guarantee is that I'll be shorter (than Vanessa)."

Meanwhile, Jason Watkins has been announced to play former Prime Minister Harold Wilson. He said of the role: "I am delighted to become part of this exceptional show. And so thrilled to be working once again with Peter Morgan.

"Harold Wilson is a significant and fascinating character in our history. So looking forward to bringing him to life, through a decade that transformed us culturally and politically.

"And excited to be working so closely with Olivia; and the whole team."

It has been announced in October last year that Olivia Colman will play Queen Elizabeth II for the next season of the Netflix drama, taking over the mantle from Claire Foy.

In March, Tobias Menzies was confirmed to be taking over the role of Prince Phillip, who has been played by Matt Smith for the past two seasons.

Season three of The Crown begins filming in the UK this summer and will return to Netflix in 2019.
