Beyoncé's father, Matthew Knowles, has confirmed that the singer has given birth to twins, writing on social media: "They're here!"

"Granddad" posted his message on Father's Day, following reports that Beyoncé and husband Jay Z welcomed their bundles of joy earlier this week.

A source had told People magazine: "Bey and Jay are thrilled and have started sharing the news with their family and closest friends."

The twins' genders and their names have yet to be announced.

Speculation had been mounting in recent days that the star had given birth at a hospital in Los Angeles after a woman was photographed entering a hospital on Friday holding a card that read "B + J". 

The news comes just days after actor George Clooney and his wife Amal welcomed their own set of twins, Ella and Alexander.

Thirty-five-year-old Beyoncé, who is already mum to five-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter, revealed the news she was adding to her family on her Instagram account in February. 

At the time, the heavily pregnant singer posted a picture of her kneeling in front of a giant hedge of roses, wearing blue satin underwear and a maroon bra. She was covered with a long green veil in the heavily stylised photo.

Accompanying the snap, Queen Bey wrote: "We would like to share our love and happiness. We have been blessed two times over.

"We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes. - The Carters."

Beyoncé and Jay Z began dating after teaming up on Jay Z's 2002 track 03 Bonnie and Clyde and married in April 2008. Their daughter was born in January 2012.

Over the weekend, Jay Z announced that he will be releasing his new album, 4:44, on June 30. The record will be accompanied by a film of the same name, starring Oscar winners Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave) and Lethal Weapon's Danny Glover.

The album will be exclusive to Jay Z's streaming service Tidal and customers of telecoms company Sprint.
