Students at a boarding school in the West of Ireland, are not happy with a change in the broadcast time for 'The Riordans' in 1977
'The Riordans' was a popular rural soap opera. Here is a petition from a boarding school in the West of Ireland, protesting at the time change from Sunday to Tuesday evenings in 1977. It says that boarders are only allowed to watch television on a Saturday and Sunday night and requests that RTÉ schedule 'The Riordans' on a Sunday so that they can watch it again. The petition was signed by 81 students.
The response of RTÉ's Head of Drama Michael Garvey is also included. Garvey explains why it is unlikely that RTÉ will revert to a Sunday transmission.

Letter and Petition Handwritten sheets, 2 pages. Reply from Michael Garvey, Head of Drama, RTÉ Typed sheet, 1 page. 'The Riordans' was Ireland's first rural soap opera. Writer James Douglas set it on a midlands farm and centred it around the owner Tom Riordan, his family, friends and neighbours. The production was ground-breaking in that it was shot using television's Outside Broadcast Unit on a real farm: Flat House in Dunboyne, owned by Mr William Connolly. This innovation would be copied by other broadcasters around the world. The popular weekly drama was broadcast on television from 1965 to 1979. In 1979 'The Riordans' was taken off television and became a radio drama until it finally finished in 1985. |
