A spokesman for the Department of Finance said this evening that Albert Reynolds stood over his budget statement that increased Value Added Tax (VAT) charges on electricity and telephone services would not be passed on to the consumer. The Consumers’ Association of Ireland had earlier accused the Minister of being misleading.
