Bastille Day celebrations in Paris and commemorating the role of Irish man Colonel Blackwell in Dublin.

The military parade in Paris is attended by President Francois Mitterand who made an appeal to end the arms race.

At Kilmainham Jail a ceremony took place to honour the County Clare man Colonel James Blackwell who led the initial storming on the Bastille nearly 200 years ago on 14 July 1789.

Speeches were made by Lieutenant General MJ Costello and Nobel Peace Prize winner Seán MacBride.

Former coalition Minister Justin Keating also spoke saying that Irish republicanism is and always has been non-sectarian and was critical of the Catholic Church.

A wreath was laid at the 1916 memorial and the Last Post was sounded.
