Minister for Finance and the Gaeltacht, George Colley outlines plans for an Irish language radio service.

George Colley says that his department looking at the specific needs and requirements for radio listeners in the Gaeltacht. There is committment to go ahead with putting in place the transmitters and physical infrastructure for the new radio service.

The structure of the new service for the Gaeltacht has yet to be decided. It is possible that the service could be independent of RTÉ or a subsidiary of the national broadcaster.

George Colley is confident that the new radio station will not mean any less Irish language broadcasting on RTÉ Radio. It is envisaged that the new service will be available in most parts of the country.

Capital costs for the venture will come directly from the exchequer and the running costs will be covered by the licence fee.
