Construction projects underway in Mayo as Ballina prepares for population expansion.
A development plan launched by Ballina Urban District Council (UDC) in 1968 has provided a framework for attracting industry to the town. The plan includes urban renewal, upgrading of commercial facilities, and proposed investment in community services and amenities, historical buildings and areas of cultural interest.
The UDC has been working closely with the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) whose Regional Industrial Plans for 1973 – 1977 have a target of 5,300 new manufacturing jobs for the west of Ireland. The population of Ballina is expected to increase as a result.
Over the last few months building work is taking place at a number of locations in the town. Construction of a new mobile gantry at Ballina train station forms part of a modernisation project by CIÉ (Córas Iompair Éireann) which, when complete, will facilitate increased freight traffic by rail.
Other developments include new housing estates, a new Catholic church and local authority offices.
