Do Irish people have a problem with the success of others?
Introducing an item on Gerry Ryan outlines how as a nation we are full of charm that Irish people like to oblige and be helpful. However there is a general feeling abroad is that when it comes to our own Ireland is a nation of begrudgers. To find out if people agree with this statement, reporter Suzanne Power takes to the streets of Temple Bar in Dublin.
One woman says that when she was younger, she would have resented people with better jobs, more money, or nicer clothes. An elderly man admits that at times he suffers from begrudgery towards,
People who are much better off than I am.
Another woman is clear she is not a begrudger,
Live and let live is my motto.
One man thinks Gerry Ryan, Gay Byrne and Mike Murphy are undeserving of their success. But he is quick to add,
I do not begrudge; I admire anyone who gets on.
To sum up Suzanne Power decides,
We're saints and scholars, with a one or two notable exceptions.
