On International Literacy Day, Aontas looks at how to address the problem of adult illiteracy in Ireland.

Director of Aontas, the National Association of Adult Education, Seán Ó Murchú, outlines some of the causes of illiteracy. Aontas has recently established a working group to examine adult literacy in Ireland. It will make recommendations to improve the ability among adutls to read and write. There appears to be an indifference in society to the problem with overcrowded schools, and other demographic factors influencing the levels of illiteracy.

Seán Ó Murchú is happy with the level of support that Aontas is receiving from the Department of Education. He believes that the problem is significant and wants to see a deadline put in place to address the eradication of illiteracy.
