Keeping bees for the production of honey and growing strawberries in County Wexford.
Staff from the Agricultural Institute (An Foras Talúntais) and horticultural instructors employed by the county committee of agriculture staged a combined open day on the beekeeping and soft fruits production in Clonroche, County Wexford.
There were practical demonstrations of beekeeping and talks on honey production and planning. Planning is key to profitable honey production.
Efforts are being made to prolong the strawberry growing season through the planting of autumn fruiting plants. They are also investigating the production of early season strawberries through the use of polythene tunnels.
These can advance the harvesting period by over a month.
