A protest by nurses announces their national campaign for better working conditions pay and promotion.
Nurses march to Leinster House in Dublin and call on Minister for Health Erskine Childers to intervene in their dispute. They are met by officials from the Department of Health.
Issues relating to nursing appointments at James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown is at the heart of the protest. According to Ena Meehan General Secretary of the INO (Irish Nurses Organisation),
We regard the implications of this situation as having national repercussions.
The decision taken by the INO to protest today is the first os a series of actions planned by the organisation. Demonstration is necessary says Ena Meehan, as progress for nurses has been slow and their concerns need to be heard.
The pressures on nurses are enormous at the moment.
