Ahead of Christmas Gardaí raid poteen makers in Connemara, County Galway.

An Garda Síochana launch their Christmas clampdown on poteen (poitín) makers in Connemara, County Galway.

They destroy £2,500 worth of the illegal alcohol discovered at a remote makeshift still house in Lettermullen on the coast of southern Connemara.

In the time honoured tradition, the moonshine patrol was making sure that the do-it yourself-distillery wasn't going to be open for production in the near future.

The seizure brings to 14 that Gardaí have made in the area,

Capturing a total of £6,000 worth of drink and equipment.

Gardaí believe less poitín is being made in Connemara than in previous years. It is not as sought after as in times past and fewer young people are willing to face the fines for having or selling the illegal brew.

Some older people in Connemara resent the Garda clampdown as they view the distilling of the drink as integral to the area, particularly at Christmas time.
