Mass and a plaque at Hayes Hotel as the GAA celebrates 100 years since it was founded in Thurles.
While the centenary celebrations have been going on for some months, the actual anniversary of the foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) is the 1 November. The GAA was founded by Michael Cusack at Hayes Hotel in Thurles in 1884..
President of Ireland Dr Patrick Hillery inspects a FCA guard of honour. The ceremonies commenced with a mass at Thurles Cathedral followed by a parade to Hayes Hotel. Those in attendance at the concelebrated mass included the Archbishop of Cashel Dr Thomas Morris who is seen holding the Sam Maguire Cup and unveiling a commemorative plaque at Hayes Hotel.
