The impression a view from the Rock of Cashel made on one writer at the turn of the twentieth century.

Stephen Lucius Gywnn (1864 - 1950) was an Anglo-Irish writer, biographer antiquarian and nationalist politician who published over sixty books during his lifetime. He held membership of the Gaelic League at one stage, and had a deep interest in the history, topography and traditional culture of Ireland. He also served with the Leinster Regiment and Connaught Rangers during World War I.

Also a writer of guidebooks, he describes in 'The Fair Hills of Ireland' (1906) a visit to a deserted Rock of Cashel where his attention turns from the atmospheric ruins to the Munster countryside,

You stand here at a meeting point of ancient principalities. Yet that day under a glorious sunshine one thought little enough of anything but mere beauty.

‘Sliabh na mBan’ is performed on fiddle by Padraig Ó Mathúna from Cashel.
