Radio Éireann broadcast from Minister for External Affairs Seán MacBride on the day Ireland left the Commonwealth.
The Republic of Ireland Act 1948 was signed into law on 21 December 1948 and came into force on Easter Monday, 18 April 1949.
On the day Ireland became a republic 'To The People' was broadcast on Radio Éireann. The programme featured contributions from the Taoiseach John A Costello, President Seán T O'Kelly, Minister for External Affairs Seán MacBride and Frank Hanna Independent Labour MP for Central Belfast.
Seán MacBride was on an official visit to America at the time and was unable to attend the ceremonies in Ireland. He recorded this message that was broadcast around the world on this important milestone on the road to national independence.
Easter Monday 1949 is memorable because on that day for the first time in the history of the world, the Republic of Ireland will take her place among the nations of the world and be recognised internationally.
Seán MacBride says that the joy of the occasion is somewhat marred by the fact that six counties of Ireland remain separate. He describes this situation as an infringement of the fundamental democratic right to national self determination.
No nation in the world has more clearly defined boundaries than Ireland.
He looks forward to a time when Ireland will be united with full control over the whole island of Ireland, its islands and territorial seas.
Seán MacBride pays tribute to all those who have made sacrifices, struggled and given their lives for the Republic of Ireland.
