Margaret Gallagher has chosen to live without electricity or running water.
From Belcoo in County Fermanagh, Margaret Gallagher lives in the two hundred year old thatched cottage where her father and grandfather also lived. There is no running water or electricity, she uses oil lamps and cooks on the open fire and has no wish to modernise her home.
It's a very simple lifestyle and it suits me.
Margaret works in community development in Belcoo, where she is part of a team working on regenerating the region through tourism and heritage. As a car comes with the job, she has made a concession to embrace modern transport,
I succumbed to the car.
The cottage will eventually be inherited by Margaret’s nephew. As it has been designated a listed building by the Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland no work can be carried out on it, so it will remain in its current condition,
It’s part of the deal.
