Supplies of bread to bakeries and supermarkets run out as maintenance workers strike bites.
A strike by maintenance craftsmen resulted in unions placing pickets on business premises. Among those impacted were the five bakeries in Dublin that supply bread to shops and supermarkets. Across the city, people queued for the last loaves of bread as supplies ran low. As bread ran out across Dublin, the demand among shoppers for flour increased. The maintenance workers dispute brought a halt to production in the bakeries.
The bakeries, Kennedys, Bolands, Downes, Rourke's and Johnston Mooney and O'Brien, laid off around 2,000 workers today because of the strike.
