A new scheme will help local authority tenants to buy their own homes.
The recent rent strike by over 70,000 local authority tenants may soon come to an end. Minister for Local Government James Tully announces a new scheme to enable tenants to buy their homes at reduced prices.
James Tully described the initiative as, a victory for democracy. Tenants set out their demands and engaged in a rent strike. In response, the coalition government decided to introduce a fair rent and fair sales scheme. The minister is confident that the rent strikes will now end.
My main object was to have a fair offer made to the tenants and I think we've achieved this.
James Tully said he is in favour of tenants becoming home owners and believes the new initiative will afford them the opportunity of doing so at a reasonable cost.
They have the right to own their own homes.
