Minister for Justice announces introduction of measures to deal with crime in Dublin.
Patrick Cooney the Minister for Justice outlines new actions to combat crime and increase the power of An Garda Síochána.
At a meeting between the minister and the and Dublin City Council, commissioners are quoted as saying,
Old and young are being attacked on the streets.
Patrick Cooney dismisses claims that Dublin is violent city and says that the increase in violence is a worldwide phenomenon. In comparison to many other cities in the world, Dublin is a peaceful city and a safe city to live in.
The minister says that the situation is not as bad as is being described and that the commissioners may be getting a slightly distorted view of the level of crime and violence on the streets of Dublin. He acknowledges that the situation is not perfect and efforts are being made to increase the number of police on the streets.
Gardaí themselves have made claims that new recruits are not being trained to deal with some situations that they may find themselves in. Patrick Cooney states that there may be some room for improvement in the type of training received by new recruits to An Garda Síochána at Templemore.
It's impossible to train the guards to the degree necessary to meet all the situations that modern life can produce for a policeman.
