A German living in Sligo has created an eco-friendly tourist destination on his farm.

Neantóg Cottages in north Sligo are one example of low-impact environmentally friendly tourism. Hans Wieland offers a green holiday location, as visitors can enjoy home made bread and cheese, as well as produce grown on his organic farm. It is all part of a sustainability ethos.

Launched at the Organic Centre in Rossinver County Leitrim, the Green Box is Ireland’s first integrated ecotourism plan.

A cross-border initiative which covers locations in counties Fermanagh, Leitrim, Donegal, Sligo, Cavan and Monaghan. The Green Box project supports business in achieving high ecotourism standards, such as energy-efficiency practices, and to promote activities such as cycling and walking.

It is an ambitious plan says Alan Hill of the Western Development Tourism Programme, but it will serve,

A demand that we know is coming from the international marketplace.

The Green Box is expected to attract approximately five thousand visitors to the north west in the coming year, and generate one and a half million euro for the local economy.
