The stars opted for suitably opulent gowns for the opening of the Cannes Film Festival 2011.

Take a look at our gallery of the red carpet style here.

Jury member Uma Thurman stole the show in a white silk Versace gown with a feathered skirt, which she had custom made for the event. The strapless frock, which she accessorised with emerald green Chopard earrings, featured a thigh high split and a cut-out back detail.

Hello! quotes the actress as saying: ""It's sexy, isn't it! I had to have it made because you know how it is for us tall girls. It's impossible to find anything in a store."

Actress Salma Hayek donned a pale Gucci number for the opening of the festival, which was heavily embellished with beads, crystals and sequins.

Rachel McAdams made a break from the nude gowns on show, opting for a scarlet Marchesa dress, featuring peek-a-boo lace panelling.

This unusual design was perhaps not the star's best red carpet look, especially paired with overly-pointy Casedei heels.

Indian actress Aishwarya Rai Bachan was bang on the mark in a scene-stealing asymmetrical Elie Saab gown with peplum detailing.

Supermodel Karolina Kurkova was another stunner at the event, in a midnight blue Armani Prive gown with sequins.
