A pedestrian has died in a road traffic incident in Co Galway.

A man in his 30s died after he was struck by a car on the N84 near Carrowbrowne, on the Headford Road shortly before 6.30am.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and has since been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway.

A post-mortem examination is to be arranged.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital for assessment.

The road at the crash site remains closed for a forensic examination and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward.

Road users with camera footage who were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make it available to investigating gardaí.
