An Bord Pleanála has confirmed that it has conceded legal challenges opposing the construction of up to 1,700 housing units in south Dublin and Co Kildare.

These developments, first reported in the Irish Times, will not now go ahead unless new planning permissions are sought.

The challenges were taken against permissions granted under Strategic Housing Development laws, aimed at fast-tracking the construction of new homes.

Under the applications, permission had been granted for 248 apartments and seven houses in Killiney, 493 apartments at Temple Hill in Monkstown, 671 build-to-rent apartments on Sandford Road in Dublin and a project for 333 homes in Clane in Co Kildare.

A spokesperson for An Bord Pleanála has said that the granting of any planning permissions does not automatically result in the construction of these developments.

The spokesperson said there would be no further comment on these issues, as a court process is still under way.
