Planning permission has been granted for what will be the biggest office development in Cork City at Albert Quay.

The €90m scheme called 'Navigation Square' includes four new buildings which will have enough space for 3,000 workers.

It is envisaged building work will begin next year and will be complete in 2018.

Cork developer Owen O'Callaghan's O'Callaghan Properties is behind the scheme.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland programme, Mr O' Callaghan said building work will start on the site in January or February of next year, with a view of filling the development within a two or two and a half year period.

Referring to the scale of the development, he said it is in excess of 310,000 ft net that will be 370,000 ft gross, adding that is is double the size of an adjoining building, No 1 Albert Quay.

He said the site will be attractive for foreign direct investors as "rental levels are less than half of that in Dublin....and service charge is quite low".

He also said Cork has alot to offer employers due to its wealth of third level graduates and said it is home to the Tyndall Institute.

"We are also the second city" he added, "which is hugely attractive for foreign direct investors."
