.ie domain names surpass 200,000 for the first time

The number of .ie domain names registered has surpassed 200,000 for the first time, according to IE Domain Registry (IEDR).

IEDR is the company responsible for the management and administration of Ireland’s official Internet address - .ie.

Limerick-based action adventure camp, www.BasecampAdventurePark.ie, has been identified as the 200,000th registered .ie domain name.

The 200,000 milestone was reached during the first quarter of this year, with a total of 203,217 .ie domain names registered by the end of the quarter.

With 44 domain names per 1,000 population Ireland ranks joint 15th with France among EU states. The Netherlands, with 332 .nl domain names have been registered per 1,000, is top of the charts. 

IEDR's first Domain Profile Report also shows that 16,992 new .ie domains were registered over the six-month period from the fourth quarter of 2014 to the first quarter of 2015.

After taking into account the .ie domains that were deleted or suspended, the result in a net increase of 6,207 .ie domains over the period - an increase of 6.4% on an annual basis.

Of the 6,207 net additions to the .ie domain registry, a total of 3,794 were registered by Irish businesses. Of this, 2,756 new .ie domains were registered by corporate entities and 1,038 by sole traders. 

Dublin, with 69, has the highest rate of .ie domains registered per 1,000 population, followed by Wicklow at 47 and Carlow at 46. Donegal, with just 16 per 1,000, has the lowest rate.
