Around a third of households had a mortgage on their main residence here in 2013.

According to the CSO household and consumption survey, only 33.9% of households still had money owing on their mortgage debt.

The figures also show that median debt of a mortgage in that year stood at €129,000.

Some 70.5% of all households own their own main residence.

The median value of the household main residence, for those who own their homes, is €150,000.

While the figures apply to 2013, property values have appreciated somewhat since then, as reflected in the CSO figures yesterday.

Just over half (57%) of all households had some form of debt, the figures show.

The median debt for households stood at €63,000.

More than 95% of households have at least one type of real asset, the most common form being a savings account.

Savings account for nearly 55% of all financial assets, followed by voluntary pensions at 21.6%.
