New figures on the Irish grocery market show that SuperValu was the only major supermarket chain - other than the discount retailers - to show growth in the 12 weeks to October 12.
The Kantar Worldpanel figures show that SuperValu's market share moved 0.2% to 24.7% in the 12 week period.
The discounters continued to show market growth, with Aldi rising by 14.3% to have a total market share of 8.4%, while Lidl grew by 14.9% to 8.2%.
Irish market leader Tesco continued to see a fall in its market share, with the figure falling by 4.6% to 25.1% in the 12 week period from 26.5% the same time last year.
However, Kantar Worldpanel noted that customers are continuing to increase the number of trips they make to Tesco stores. It said this means that if the company can persuade shoppers to add to their spend there, it could be a turning point in terms of its performance.
After five months of growth in a row, Dunnes saw a small decrease in sales of 0.4% and it now has a market share of 22.7%. It has attracted an extra 13,000 shoppers into its shops despite the average spend falling by 7%.
Kantar Worldpanel also said today that grocery inflation stands at 2.4% in the 12 week period, up from 1.6% in the previous period. This had been one of the lowest levels of inflation in almost three years.
