Independent News and Media has announced that it's merging editorial functions of the Sunday World and the Herald newspapers.

As part of the reorganisation, it will introduce a voluntary redundancy programme.

The company says it's creating what it calls a 'Digital First' content centre to which reporters will file to optimise its news offering.

It says the editorial reorganisation is being undertaken to 'future-proof' both titles.

The initiative is part of the overall ongoing group re-organisation of INM.

Stephen Rae, Editor-In-Chief of INM described it as a 'fundamental restructuring of the production and reporting process.'

The group announced cuts of of €20 million to operational costs in June last.
