London Olympics one reason for WPP's optimism for 2012

Global advertising giant WPP said today that its net profits jumped 43% last year, and gave an upbeat outlook for 2012 due to a raft of major events including the London Olympics.

Earnings after taxation climbed to £840m sterling in 2011, compared with £586m the previous year, WPP said in a results statement. Total revenues grew by 7.4% to £10.02 billion.

Pre-tax profits rallied 18.5% to a record £1.008 billion last year, boosted by particularly strong performances in Asia and Latin America.

WPP, which is the world's biggest advertising company by revenues, also gave a positive outlook for 2012, thanks to three high-profile events - the UEFA Football Championships, the London Olympics and the US presidential elections.

Martin Sorrell, the firm's chief executive, said plans are in place to for the group to move moving its headquarters back to Britain from Dublin.

In recent years several UK companies, including WPP, Shire Pharmaceuticals and UBM, moved their tax domicile to Ireland where the corporation tax rate is 12.5%.
