Commission charges for internet based travel agents a big burden for Irish hotels

Internet-based travel agents such as Expedia, ebookers and lastminute.com have become a vital source of bookings for Irish hotels.

Many hoteliers fill as many as half their rooms through the online agents.

It can be a costly option, however, with commission charges from as much as 25% of the room price.

The Irish Hotels Federation now estimates the industry pays up to €50m a year in commissions.
