A new Intel Energy and Sustainability Lab has been announced for Ireland. News of the lab was made the Intel European Research and Innovation conference, which was held this week in Leixlip, Co Kildare.
The company said the new lab will drive its research agenda in the application of Information Technologies to enable a high tech, low carbon economy. It will leverage a growing ecosystem of academic and industrial partners in Europe and beyond, the company added.
The lab will generate jobs for over 20 researchers and has the potential for many more if its work is successful.
''Energy and sustainability are two of the biggest challenges in the world today,'' commented Martin Curley, Director of Intel Labs Europe. ''We have helped create a new nascent ecosystem for accelerating our collective progress towards achieving a goal of a much more sustainable and energy efficient society,' he added.
A number of research projects have announced yesterday including a collaboration with the ESB eCars programme, which involves looking at the integration and optimisation of electric vehicles into the country's energy system. The lab will also research a new device that monitors the energy usage in homes and provides information to smartly manage energy use as well as a personal office energy manager system.
Intel Labs Europe consists of over two dozen research and development locations across Europe, with a workforce of over 1,500.
