The social networking company Twitter is to establish an international office in Dublin, IDA Ireland has announced.

The company is to begin recruiting immediately for roles in finance, user support and marketing.

It is understood Twitter is setting up an international headquarters which will service users outside the US. Files at the company records office show that it established a new company called Twitter International in Ireland earlier this month.

IDA chief executive Barry O'Leary said Twitter's decision to locate in Dublin would be a fantastic addition to Ireland's digital media cluster.

The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton welcomed the announcement which he said was a massive win for Ireland. He said it showed that, despite our difficulties, Ireland has real strengths as an economy.

He said there had been no indication yet as to the number of jobs that would be created. But he said other companies such as Facebook and Google had started off small here, before growing rapidly.

The announcement was made by IDA Ireland this morning in an early morning tweet.

Jobs boost for Galway

The BioWare game development company - a division of Electronic Arts - has announced plans to recruit a further 200 workers for its new operation in Galway, bringing to 400 the number that will be employed there.

At the official opening of a new global customer service centre this afternoon, the company said it had chosen Ireland as a location because it had a steady supply of well-educated people.

It also pointed to State supports and said there was a great partnership between BioWare and the Government that would allow the company to expand further here in the coming years.

More than 100 people are already employed at the company's Irish base and recruitment for the remaining jobs has started. The centre in Galway will provide support for gamers in the English, French and German languages.

Speaking at the opening, the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny said the Government hoped that the investment by BioWare would encourage other game development companies to look at Ireland.

As well as the new centre in Galway, EA has a presence in Dublin after its recent purchase of PopCap.

PWC looking for recruits to graduate programme

Consulting group PricewaterhouseCoopers says it is looking to recruit almost 300 people.

250 of these will be part of its graduate recruitment programme, while PwC is also looking for 40 professionally qualified people to fill "strategic roles" across the firm.

PwC senior partner Ronan Murphy said the level of recruitment was a reflection of the demand for the firm's services.

PwC said most of the new jobs for professionals would be in its Dublin office at Spencer Dock, but positions were also available in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Kilkenny, Waterford and Wexford.
