A proposal by Dublin City Council to extend residential parking charges has provoked controversy among councillors.
A presentation to councillors says officials would like to eliminate all free parking in the area between the canals and adjacent areas.
However the vast majority of streets in the city centre are already covered by parking charges including pay and display and residential disc parking.
Any proposal to extend the area into suburbs would be resisted according to Labour Cllr Paddy Bourke who described is as a ‘purely revenue generating idea’.
A council spokeswoman said there are no proposals to end the practice of getting the consent of residents to introducing charges or extending the hours they are in force.
