Bord Gáis has agreed a deal to become a shareholder in Irish tidal renewable energy company, OpenHydro.

Bord Gáis will initially invest €1m in OpenHydro and has also agreed to invest another €1m on meeting certain milestones in the future.

OpenHydro designs and manufactures marine turbines for generating renewable energy from the sea. It employs over 50 people and has projects in the US, Canada, France and Scotland.

The two companies also today announced a joint venture which will develop a utility scale tidal farm off the coast of Ireland.

'This investment - and the formation of the joint venture to develop utility scale tidal generating capacity off the coast of Ireland - will support our ambition to achieve early mover advantage in tidal energy development in this country,' commented Bord Gáis CEO John Mullins.

Expert announces 35 new jobs at three new stores

Electrical retailer Expert, which is based in Westmeath, has announced 35 new jobs at three new stores. The group of independent electrical retailers currently employs more than 600 people in 60 stores across the country.

The company says the first ten new jobs were filled at a new store which opened in Cleveragh Retail Park in Sligo in December. The other 25 posts will come from the opening of two new planned stores over the next 12 months.
