Energy reconnection fees may be cut

Gas and electricity reconnection fees may be halved, if new proposals from the Energy Commissioner are put in place.

Discussions are currently taking place about the prospect of reducing the cost of reconnection for consumers. It follows the high number of debt-ridden consumers being disconnected.

The new plan would mean that instead of consumers forking out the full cost of reconnection, energy suppliers such as the ESB and Bord Gáis would pay half. This would cut €100 off the cost.

Figures show that every month more than 2,000 electricity customers are being disconnected while 300 gas meters are being locked.
