Fears are growing for 29 jobs at a Limerick printing plant after they announced a review of their operations.
The UNITE trade union has called for urgent support for Limerick and the Mid West region following the announcement by Johnston Press that it is to review Limerick printing plant operations.
If implemented, the plant is set to close in mid-December.
In a statement, David Crow, divisional managing director of print for Johnston Press, said: ‘It has also been identified that the press no longer meets the requirements of the market and does not adequately serve the needs of our readers and advertisers whom we are committed to providing top quality products.
‘Following this review, it is proposed to cease printing activities at Leader Print Limited with effect from mid December. It is regrettable but necessary in an ever increasingly competitive market. '
UNITE said it would be meeting with management of Johnston press in the coming days to explore alternative possibilities to closure or to secure a fair redundancy deal for workers.
