Insurrection - Episode IV
Easter Week, 1916 - a dramatic reconstruction by Hugh Leonard, in eight parts.
Wednesday, 26 April 1916: 'Two Thousand Sherwood Foresters'.
Episode IV opens with citizens reading a proclamation
posted on a wall and troops from the Sherwood Foresters
disembarking from a ship.
In studio, presenter Ray McAnally reports on the
warm welcome the British troops received and how the
admiralty gunboat the''Helga' bombed Liberty Hall.
At Trinity College, a porter (Fred Johnson) tells
a reporter what he has seen since Monday. A priest
tends to the wounded on the roof of the GPO.
In studio, McAnally reports that an advanced party
of the Sherwood Foresters has been attacked at Haddington
Road. Action of soldiers coming under fire is shown.
McAnally analyses the attack using a model of the
area around Mount Street Bridge. Gerry Alexander reports
from the action at the junction of Haddington Road
and Northumberland Road.
In Clanwilliam House, seven rebels attack the Sherwood Foresters. In
studio, Ray McAnally interviews General Lowe (Denis
McCarthy). A rebel prisoner (Vincent Dowling) from
the surrendered Mendicity Institute describes the
last few hours, and the injuries to Staines and Balfe.
There is a report from Mount Street bridge where
soldiers come under heavy fire from Clanwilliam House.
Soldiers make their way into 25 Northumberland Road.
In studio, Ray McAnally interviews General Sir John
Maxwell (Howard Marion-Crawford) in London, who has
been appointed General Commanding His Majesty's Forces
in Ireland.
There is further action from Clanwilliam House as it comes
under heavy fire. In studio, Ray McAnally reports
that Mount Street Bridge has been taken and that the
Sherwood Foresters will now head for
the city centre. |
