As chosen by the RTÉ Poetry Programme, our Poem of the Week is Costa del Dento by Rita Ann Higgins, a work that initially lulls you into thinking is a humorous poem, but then takes a dark turn.

Listen to Costa del Dento below:

Rita Ann Higgins is one of Ireland’s most popular contemporary poets, beloved of readers and audiences ever since she published her first collection, Goddess on The Mervue Bus, with the pioneers at Salmon Poetry way back in 1986. Costa del Dento is from her latest collection, Tongulish, published by Bloodaxe earlier this year.

In this week’s Poetry Programme, at 7:30 pm on Saturday 10 December on RTÉ Radio 1, presenter Rick O’Shea looks back at some of the highlights of the past year – including Costa del Dento by Rita Ann Higgins – and brings us a few new poems.

You can also listen back to the full interview with Rita Ann Higgins, broadcast earlier this year, here.
