5.15pm Markets Update

European stock markets were little changed by this evening's close, regaining some ground after earlier losses.

London's FTSE 100 ended up 0.1% at 5,578, though hedge fund Man Group dropped 2.4% to 214p after reporting more customer withdrawals. In Paris, the CAC slipped 0.1% to 3,762, while in Frankfurt the DAX also dropped 0.1% to 6,276.

In Dublin, the ISEQ ended down 22 points (0.8%) at 2,661, with banks weaker as Irish borrowing costs spiked again. AIB fell 5.7% to 54 cent and Bank of Ireland lost 7.4% to 54 cent. But bookmaker Paddy Power gained 2.1% to €25.35. Shares in Greencore were up 1.3% to €1.16 after a trading update from the food group said that trading in the late summer months was in line with its expectations.

On Wall Street, markets were mixed after news of a bigger than expected drop in consumer confidence in September. The Dow Jones was 0.2% higher at 10,835, while the Nasdaq was flat at 2,369.

Earlier Tokyo lost 1.1% to close at 9,496 as the yen held near its highest level in almost two weeks. The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong dropped 1% to finish at 21,110.
