150 new jobs are to be created in Monaghan with the opening of a state of the art mushroom growing facility at Tyholland.
The €10m development will allow Monaghan Mushrooms increase its market share in the UK and Irish markets. The company already employs over 2,000 people in Ireland and overseas.
The new facility consists of 18 mushroom growing houses and is far larger and more productive than traditional mushroom tunnels. It can produce up to 115 tonnes of mushrooms every week most of which will be exported to the UK
Already Monaghan Mushrooms has 45% of the UK mushroom market. It is hoped the new development will allow the company expand there and also on the domestic front where it has 17% of the market. The company recently opened an operation in Canada.
In Ireland and overseas, Monaghan Mushrooms already has a workforce of over 2,200 people.
This €10m development at Tyholland on the outskirts of Monaghan town will create an additional 150 jobs and was opened this morning by the Minister for Agriculture, Brendan Smith.
Earlier this year, Monaghan Mushrooms closed down its plant in Belmullet in Co Mayo with the loss of 71 jobs. The Drimbawn Mushrooms facility at Belmullet had been in operation under Monaghan Mushrooms for around six years.
