European share prices closed lower, with London's FTSE down 0.8% at 5,211 points.
In Paris, the CAC lost 1.4% to 3,582 points and in Frankfurt the DAX shed 1% to 6,149 points.
In Dublin, the ISEQ index of Irish shares fell 56 points (1.9%) to 2,891. Bank shares were in negative territory, with AIB down 5.6% to €0.85 and Bank of Ireland down 4.3% to €0.71. House builder Abber rose 0.9% to €4.39 after it reported a pre-tax profit of €15.2m for the year to the end of April, a turnaround from the loss of €54.4m in the previous year.
In New York, the Dow Jones had slipped 0.9% to 10,276 points while the Nasdaq had also fallen 0.9% to 2,230 points.
Earlier, Japan's Nikkei closed 1.1% lower at 9,685 points, while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong shed 1.5% to 20,255 points.
