Guardian Media Group chief executive Carolyn McCall is to become the new boss at British budget airline EasyJet.

Ms McCall will replace the outgoing head Andy Harrison, who is set to join hotel and restaurant group Whitbread later this year. Her start date will be announced later.

Ms McCall has been chief executive of GMG since 2006 and has recently overseen a restructuring of the group as it responds to the economic downturn.

Before that, she was chief executive at Guardian News and Media (GNM) for six years and other positions included advertising director, commercial director and managing director.

During her tenure at GMG, Ms McCall oversaw the launch of the Guardian's website, the move to its Berliner format and the diversification of the group's portfolio.
