Gardaí in Dublin have been given a further 12 hours to question William McAteer, a former finance and chief risk officer at Anglo Irish Bank.
He is the second senior figure from the bank to be arrested as part of a garda investigation into financial irregularities.
Mr McAteer was arrested at his home at 6.30am this morning and is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Irishtown Garda Station in Dublin. He can be questioned for up to 24 hours.
He resigned from the bank last year.
Last Friday, former Anglo chairman and chief executive Sean FitzPatrick was released from Bray Garda Station after being questioned for almost 24 hours about financial irregularities at the bank. He had also been detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
