The UNITE trade union is to ballot its members at Bank of Scotland (Ireland) seeking a mandate for industrial action up to, and including, the withdrawal of labour.
The bank announced last Tuesday that it is to close its Halifax branch network and associated services with the loss of 750 jobs.
Union officials have met members across the country since the announcement and will start the ballot tomorrow. A result is expected within seven days.
'Workers are angry that they are being asked to pay the price for mismanagement and reckless banking practices,' said UNITE Regional Officer, Brian Gallagher.
'There is a determination to fight to save as many jobs as possible, and to push for an alternative survival plan for the bank in Ireland through its playing a vital role in the third banking force,' he added.
