In a statement released today, Bus Éireann outlined the initial service changes which will come into effect.
Today's first phase sees 22 frequency or route changes and eight services being withdrawn.
Among those being axed are Portumna-Dublin; Cork-Roscrea-Athlone; Cork City's South Mall-Mahon-Jacob's Island; Ballyvourney-Cork; Ardcath-Dublin; Tralee-Cork; Galway - Kiltullagh and Macroom to Kilcrohane.
It said that the majority of these routes have very low customer support and that ‘given the current economic environment and the limit to the operational funds available to the company these services are no longer sustainable’.
It said in many cases services had five passengers or less at departure, and that ‘the fare revenue from these customers does not even cover the fuel for the bus let alone the wages for the driver or the maintenance of the vehicle’.
The company will announce additional phases of changes over the coming weeks.
The plan will also see a reduction of approximately 250 positions across the organisation.
Customers on routes where alterations come into effect from 28 February will be informed of the change to their service from today and information on service changes will be available from local travel centres and viewable at on their website.
