As part of job cuts announced last year, Royal Bank of Scotland, which owns Ulster Bank here, today told 196 technology services staff in its Dublin office and 25 in its Belfast office that they are being laid off.

The bank said that some roles will be transferred to locations where RBS has key back office hubs in the UK and elsewhere.

RBS said it will work closely with all impacted staff and their representatives. It said it will offer redundancy terms and, where possible, opportunities for redeployment.

'It is our intention to ensure that the number of compulsory redundancies is kept to a minimum,' the bank said.

Last August Ulster Bank said it was looking for another 250 voluntary lay-offs, saying a similar scheme introduced in January 2009 was 'very heavily over-subscribed'. At that time, the bank said it was looking for 750 job cuts.
