Michael Fingleton - Dáil comments 'outrageous'

Fine Gael TD Paul Kehoe has written to the Dáil Committee on Procedures and Privileges stating that he will not be withdrawing or apologising for comments he made in the Dáil about former Irish Nationwide Building Society chief executive Michael Fingleton.

Today's Irish independent reports that Mr Fingleton has written to the Committee seeking an apology from Mr Kehoe in the Dáil.

This comes after the Fine Gael deputy described him during a Dáil debate as a gangster. The Wexford TD, who is a member of the Dáil Committee on Procedures and Privileges, said he would be abstaining from the committee's deliberations on the issue and would not be making any further comment.

The 'gangster' comment was made under Dáil privilege by Deputy Kehoe during a debate on the NAMA Bill on October 13.

Referring to Mr Fingleton and to the former chairman of Anglo Irish Bank Sean FitzPatrick, Deputy Kehoe said they were 'two of the biggest gangsters ever involved in banking institutions'.

The Irish Independent reports this morning that Mr Fingleton has demanded an apology for what he described as 'outrageous' and 'misinformed' comments.
